Blown head gaskets can happen to anyone. Compression testing is one of the most common ways to see how heavy a load a gasket can take. We will discuss how to compression test a blown head gasket in cars.

Blown Head Gasket Compression Testing

What is a Blown Head Gasket?

Your had gasket is between your engine block and the cylinder head. It prevents the liquids of your car from mixing with each other, as well as seals the cylinders for optimum pressure.

This gasket is specially designed to withstand incredible amounts of pressure and temperature. However, fluctuations occur and when they do, your gasket is subject to damage thereby lending it to be “blown”. A blown head gasket can cause compression loss or even external leaks, which can both be a lethal problem that’s heavy on the pocket.

Signs and Symptoms of a Blown Head Gasket

Overheating is one of the most common signs of a faulty head gasket. You will notice how quickly it overheats despite checking that the thermostat, radiator, water pump and cooling system are all working fine.

Another sign of a bad gasket is when white smoke comes out of your tailpipe. With this symptom, you will smell seemingly burning anti-freeze.

Longer crank engine time is another sign of a bad gasket. Even worse, other cars that are suffering from this problem won’t even start.

How to Compression Test a Blown Head Gasket

In many cases, head gaskets have burned at a point between two cylinders. What occurs is that the gap in the gasket allows the combustion or compression of one cylinder to seep to the other or vice versa.

You can conduct a compression test by removing all of the spark plugs and threading the compression manually. Crank the engine and observe the readings on your compression tester for each cylinder. When two side-by-side cylinders result in 0 psi, then there’s a problem.

Differences Between PVC and CPVC

The first C in CPVC stands for Chlorinated.  How much chlorine CPVC has depends on the manufacturer, but it can be as much as a 20% increase. However, the additional chlorine in the pipe itself has no effect on the water moving through it.

Temperature resistance is another difference between PVC and CPVC. PVC is safe for residential water applications below 140°F. However, CPVC is safe at temperatures up to 200°F. Temperatures above those limits will result in softening of the pipe and weak joints, leading to leaks and failure.

Another difference between PVC and CPVC is the sizing. PVC size goes according to IPS (Iron Pipe Size) standards. While CPVC can be IPS-sized, it is more common in CTS (Copper Tubing Size) standards.

Color is another way that PVC and CPVC differ. PVC is typically white (schedule 40) or gray (schedule 80), as well as the more rare purple, which indicates reclaimed or recycled water that is unfit for drinking. This color is common for landscaping and irrigation. CPVC is typically either an off-white, yellowish cream color (schedule 40), or light gray (schedule 80).

The price is another difference between PVC and CPVC. PVC is typically less expensive than CPVC, but not by much. Both are much less expensive than metal or PEX.

PVC vs. CPVC: Common Applications

PVC Applications

A common application for PVC is the service line. This goes between the water main and the home (and is the homeowner’s responsibility). CPVC has approval for underground use, but it is more expensive and doesn’t offer any benefits in this particular situation.

PVC is also commonly used in the Drain-Waste-Vent (DWV) system. This carries the wastewater to the sewer, regulates air in the pipes and removes dangerous gases from the home.

Additionally, PVC is a popular choice for yard irrigation and sprinkler systems. Flexible PVC is common for pool, spa or hot tub installations as well where rigid piping may not fit or require more joints.

CPVC Applications

Technically, CPVC can do anything PVC can, but its use in the home is typically limited to indoor water distribution (the system of pipes that carry water to fixtures around the house). CPVC is ideal for homes with corrosive water or soil conditions.

CPVC is also common in fire sprinkler systems, as it provides heat resistance, low price, durability and ease of installation. It is plastic, so it is relatively un-reactive and will not rust like metal options.

Seamless tubing, welded tubing and seam-free tubing all appear to be consistently free of seams. However, a closer look reveals significant differences. Stainless Steel Round Tubing is common for structural purposes and applications that range from aesthetic to highly functional.

Seamless Tube vs. Welded Tube

Seamless tube is extruded and drawn from a billet. However, welded tube is produced from a strip that is roll formed and welded to produce a tube.

Welded tube is generally less expensive than seamless tube and is readily available in long continuous lengths. Typically, welded tubes go through a debarring process that removes the welded tube a smoother, almost brushed finish look.

Tube vs. Pipe

Tubes are structural. They are common for structural purposes and utilize outside diameter (OD) measurements.

Conversely, pipes are passageways. Pipes are common to transport gases or fluids and utilize the inside diameter (ID) measurements.

Applications of Seamless Tubes

Specific extreme applications will determine the needs for seamless high pressure tubing. In addition, it will discourage the use of welded tube because the designers can’t risk the chance for defect. Major seamless applications consists of the following:

While seam-free tubing is a common substitute for seamless tubing in some applications, the products are not always interchangeable. Pneumatic fittings connect sections of pipe, tube and hose in pressurized gas systems. Compared to hydraulic fittings, pneumatic fittings are generally characterized by tighter seals and lower pressure requirements. They are common in pneumatic logic control systems and instrumentation. We will discuss pneumatic fitting specifications and materials.

Specifications of Pneumatic Fittings

Sizing

Once you have determined the type of fitting required, proper sizing can be addressed. Proper sizing is essential to successful fitting selection. This is because oversized or undersized parts will either be completely incompatible or will seal or connect inadequately.

A pneumatic fitting size is defined by the size of vessels it connects to. Sizes for tubes, hoses and pipes use the inside diameter (ID) and outside diameter (OD). Measurements are inches (in) or millimeters (mm). The fitting’s design is ideal for connecting a tube with a 2″ OD have a rating of 2″ OD fitting. Inside diameter measures the diameter of the empty portion of the cylinder. However, outside diameter diameter involves the thickness of the tubing wall.

Operation

Pneumatic fittings ratings are usually for specific temperature and pressure ranges for what they can handle.

The working range of pressures or the pressure ratings at which the fitting can operate is the operating pressure range. Generally, measurements are in pounds per square inch (psi). Operating above or below this rating can result in the fitting failing (i.e. break, leak, lose its seal).

The working range of temperatures or the temperature ratings at which the fitting can operate is the operating temperature range. Measurements are in degrees Fahrenheit (°F) or degrees Celsius (°C).

Materials Used for Pneumatic Fittings


Fitting material is critical for determining a variety of physical properties of the part as well as gas compatibility. Material options include metals, plastics and composites.

Metals

Aluminum

Aluminum is lightweight and corrosion resistant. In addition, it has low tensile strength and is common in low pressure applications for its corrosion resistance and low density.

To improve its strength and hardness, aluminum is alloyed with zinc, copper, silicon, manganese and/or other metals.

Brass

Brass is strong, durable and corrosion resistant. Also, it has high temperature ductility and good conductivity, and is is an alloy of copper and zinc.

Brass contains excellent performance properties and machinability. Therefore, it is a common metal for smaller compression and fitting that uses threading, which is typical of pneumatic systems.

Steel

Steel is durable and strong with high heat resistance. It is an alloy of iron and carbon. In addition, it is generally alloyed with other metals to improve its resistance to corrosion.

For added rust protection and chemical resistance, galvanized steel contains a zinc coating.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is strong with a great resistance to chemicals and corrosion. Additionally, it is an alloy of steel that contains over 10.5 percent chromium.

This metal has the strength and durability of steel while also providing excellent resistance to corrosion.

Plastics

Fluororesins

Fluororesins such as polytetrafluroroethylene (PTFE) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) are fluorcarbon-based polymers common for temperature requirements above 500°F (250°C).

Additionally, this plastic exhibits extremely good chemical resistance and dielectric properties.

Polypropylene

This thermoplastic material is common for pneumatic fittings because of its price, broad material compatibility and durability. It exhibits great cold flow, bi-axial strength and yield elongation properties.

The use of this material is great for applications with exposure because of its UV, weathering and ozone resistance.

Composites

Composite fittings consist of those made from combinations of materials, such as carbon, fiberglass and graphite. Also, they have high melting points and are useful as fittings for applications that require high temperature durability and chemical resistance.  These materials also exhibit low electrical and thermal conductivity.
